On my first doctors visit for panic attacks she prescribed me anxiety pills that would essentially boost my serotonin levels.Serotonin is a chemical in your brain that plays in important part in your mood levels, appetite as well as other important functions. After I had a terrible reaction to the medication I started to wonder if there were any natural ways to boost serotonin and found a wonderful book called the Serotonin Power Diet written by two doctors. At first, I was skeptical of their diet plan but the more I read the more I believed it. They conducted extensive research on how people produce serotonin and their findings were incredible. What they discovered was the only way your body can produce it is by eating carbs alone. Not carbs with fat or carbs mixed with proteins just carbs.
I started to analyze my diet and realized that I’d been doing a low carb/high protein diet for years now. The doctors in the book suggested that there has been a correlation between the increase in low carb diets in the U.S. and the increase in depression/anxiety throughout our country. They suggest that it’s the diets that may be causing people to actually be depressed because they produce only small amounts of serotonin and it’s not enough to balance their moods.

I started this diet not expecting to much but honestly within the first day or two I felt 100 times better. I went from rolling panic attacks to zero. It was crazy! I don’t credit the diet 100% with the change because I mentioned in my pervious articles that I made several other changes but I know the diet played a huge role. My mood is better and I can deal with life better. It’s a whole new me. I’m not suggesting this is a cure but it truly impacted me for the better. The diet was simple to follow and didn’t have a lot of fuss. I cheated some days but remembered to always get those carb snacks in. Those are the key. I even lost over 5 pounds on the diet and I’ve only been on it a few weeks. It’s working.
Here are a couple tips I learned along the way:
Don’t eat your carb snacks too close to when you eat a protein. You need to eat them about 2 1/2-3 hours after you last ate a protein. If you eat them too close together then the protein will block your brain from producing serotonin. So plan accordingly.
Also, I found it super helpful to pack snack bags with my carb snacks and keep them in my purse or car. That way you are never without them. Even at family events I’ll make sure to take my snacks.
Don’t overeat. The doctors in the book actually proved that serotonin is the chemical that tells your brain you’ve eaten enough and without it you won’t feel full. If you’re doing this diet correctly you should feel full. If you are always hungry, then take a look at your daily intake and make sure you’re doing the diet correctly. Make changes if needed.
